Review: Lunch at Schwartz's, Montreal

The Bottom Line

Deli Schwartz's is still one of the best places in Canada to get a smoked meat sandwich.
  • Overall rating: 10/10
    • Ambiance: average
    • Food Quality: excellent
    • Value: excellent
  • Time to spend: budget 1 hour, plus wait time

Recommended Dishes

  • There is only one thing you should order - a smoked meat sandwich with a side of pickles and cherry coke.  :)
  • After you're done your meal, ask for a pound of smoked meat to go so you can enjoy this again at home!

The Restaurant

It was a very cold January afternoon, and after wandering  around town in the freezing cold for 45 minutes, we ended up at Schwartz's, ready for a warm delightful smoked meat sandwich. You would expect the place to be empty, given that it was between lunch and dinner time and the bitter cold encourages lazing around at home by the fireplace. That was not true as to my dismay, there was a line-up outside the deli. After shuffling for another 20 minutes trying to keep my extremities from getting frostbitten, the door welcomingly opened and we were allowed inside a packed deli.

I gathered this old styled Jewish deli hasn't changed much through the years. It's still one of my favourite places to eat in Montreal, and I don't expect that to change in the near future either! Schwartz's is a deli, so don't expect fancy tablecloths, or even that you will get your own table. Chances are, unless you're a group of 6, you will have to share your table with other diners. But this just adds on to the coziness of the deli and the sighs of satisfaction of your neighbouring diners are contagious.

Once comfortably seated, I was greeted by a very friendly server. The table behind us was in town to watch the World  Junior Hockey Championship, and they were all wearing team Canada jerseys and excited about the game that coming evening. Their unconfined excitement was surely contagious, and we contemplated buying the tickets to the game, until we realized that it was $200 Cdn a ticket, and we would be wiser to spend that money on good food.

The Food

In a nutshell - mouth-watering excellent! The smoked meat sandwich is one of the juiciest and delicious cuts of meat I've tasted. I'm normally not much of a sandwich fan, I don't like bread, and I've found most sandwiches to be dry. Not at Schwartz's. For the meat, you have the option of lean, half fat, or fatty meat. Make sure you add in a side of pickles, and complete your satisfying meal with a cherry soda.
After a satisfying meal, I left the restaurant a very happy customer indeed.

Review: Point G Macarons, Montreal

The Bottom Line

Small bakery serving some of the best macarons in this side of the continent. A must try!

  • Rating: 9/10

Overview

Address: 1266 Avenue du Mont-Royal E, Montreal. QC. H2J 1Y4
Website: http://boutiquepointg.com
Recommended duration: 15 minutes

The Store

I first heard of Point G when my friend brought me a box of macarons from Montreal, and since then I have fallen in love with them.
When I went to Montreal over the christmas break, we took a detour and went to Point G. A few large maracon paintings covered the store display window, which I feel is a shame because customers were not able to look inside the beautiful store. If you think back to the stores you've been to, it has always been the dirty/ messy stores that would try to hide it by making the store front opaque. I didn't feel it necessary here, as the interior is elegant, with a beautiful macaron tower on display.

The macarons

Macarons are a French meringue-based confection made primarily with sugar, eggs white, and almond powder.
Point G have many different types of macarons on display, but I find they are slightly on the sweet side, so my suggestion is to ask for a selection of the semi-sweet macarons.
I can't remember the exact pricing, but I do remember them to be reasonably priced, which is an added bonus! Of course, you can't compare them to the deliciously chewy treats from Laduree in Paris, but Point G still has some of the best macarons on this side of the continent.

L'Express dinner review, Montreal

The Bottom Line

Authentic looking French restaurant with above average food.

Rating: 7/10

Recommended Dishes

  • Bone marrow with coarse salt

Overview

Address: 3927 Rue Saint-Denis, Montreal. H2W 2M4
Recommended duration: budget 2.5 hours

The Atmosphere

My friend, a self proclaimed foodie, insisted on visiting Restaurant L'Express at every Montreal trip. The restaurant is a charming Parisian style bistro, with a long bar and classic black and white checkered floor. Classic and authentic. By the time we arrived, the place is already bustling with guests.

The Food

For appetizers we ordered the french onion soup, fish soup, and bone marrow with coarse salt. My favourite was bone marrow. It's not what I would normally eat at home, but the marrow was surprisingly flavourful and soft.

For the main course, I ordered the hanger steak with shallot butter and fries. While I would say that the steak was delicious, I thought that the fries were only average.

Crêperie Chez Suzette, Montreal

Overview

Crêperie Chez Suzette is located in the heart of Old Montreal. We visited the restaurant for dessert after our (rather expensive) dinner at Les 400 Coups

The Atmosphere

From the outside, the store looks small, with only maybe a dozen tables inside. However, once you step inside, you'll quickly realize that the store also owns space above the store entrance. In fact, they have washrooms both on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and the seating capacity is much more than what you can see from the store front. What I meant to say is, if the restaurant looks busy, go in anyways, chances are, they have additional seating upstairs.

The Food

Our dinner at Les 400 Coups, although delightful, was expensive and somewhat lacking in quantity, and some of us (myself included), left the restaurant wanting more. Which is surprising, given that I'm less than 110lbs and eat less than an average person per meal (disclaimer, I eat constantly throughout the day though! I'm what you would call, a muncher)

We ordered: French Onion Soup, Chocolate Strawberry Crepe, and Strawberry Crepe with Chantilly Sauce.

My favorite was by far the French Onion Soup. It was simply divine. The gooey cheese, baked just to perfection where you can see the crust starting to brown, made this one of dishes you'd want to try.

French Onion Soup - simply divine!

For dessert crepes, I can't really comment, since I've often found them to be a tad on the sweeter side, and this was no exception. Presentation-wise, it was nice, but I don't find there to be any distinguishing factors that would make these crepes stand out more than the average.

In summary, if I were to go back to Montreal, I would order French Onion Soup again. As for dessert crepes? I suppose, but only if I'm in the mood for something sweet.

Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Montreal

Overview

Built in the 1950s, the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth is a famed hotel in the Montreal area. Famous guests from Queen Elizabeth II to John Lennon and John Travolta have all stayed here before.

Address: 900 Rene Levesque Blvd. W, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. H3B 4A5
Website: http://www.fairmont.com/queen-elizabeth-montreal/

Location

Perfect! It is located within walking distance to Old Montreal, as well as connected underground to the train Central Station.

Hotel

To be honest, I wasn't overly thrilled by the hotel exterior. It looked old and gave a hospital vibe. The inside, most likely due to continual maintenance and renovation, was beautiful. Our visit was during the christmas holidays, so there were many bright Christmas trees to entertain guests!

The hotel boasts an amazing swimming pool. We arrived late and the pool was closed already, but it sure looks like a calm and relaxing place for a dip.

Rooms

Given that this is a somewhat older hotel, the rooms were decent and comfortable. We were a party of 4, and requested for connecting rooms, which is another pro for the hotel.
Rooms at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth

All in all, the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel offers a comfortable stay. I'm not sure if I would stay here again though, as the rates are fairly high, and there are newer and better priced hotels in Montreal.

Dinner at Les 400 Coups, Montreal

Les 400 Coups, located in Old Montreal, is a superb restaurant with delicate refined dishes, and a cozy and French inspired decor.

Food

If I have to describe the food, I would say that it is refinement and artistic. Our dinner began with three appetizers: boudin blanc (white sausage), larded liver paste, and white onion soup.

The White Onion soup was by far my favourite - the creamy texture accented with a subtle hint of smoked sturgeon gave it the perfect balance. It was so so so good! For $12, I wish they gave me a huge bowl of it, because it could have this, and this only, for the entire meal.

White Onion Soup - smoked sturgeon, elderberry, sorrel
Boudin Blanc (white sausage) - kohlrabi, tarragon, raspberry

Larded liver pâté - rhubarb, pickled cucumber, apple, dill
For our mains, we ordered: suckling pig and the yellow sturgeon. The suckling pig was technically perfect with the pork tender and cooked to perfection. However, it left me wanting more, as I did not think they gave me enough in terms of quantity!

Suckling Pig from Gaspor Farm - celeriac puree, cherry, radish, sweet gale jus

Yellow sturgeon - Naked oats, carrot, Brussels sprouts, veal jus with smoked herring, savory
For wine, we ordered the recommended 2012 Juste Ciel from La Petite Baigneuse. I've never heard or tasted this brand before, but it was wonderful and went beautifully with the meal. I would recommend this wine.

All in all, Les 400 Coups offers a beautiful meal, both in taste and in artistry. If your wallet can afford it, I would recommend making a visit!
