We woke up around 8am, and after repacking our meats from the freezer (to use for BBQ on camp night), checked out and headed to the dock for our 11am ferry. Because we brought our car, we needed to reserve our booking in advance.
11am
There are two ferries that service between Leamington and Pelee Island, and our 11am ferry was the smaller boat. The ride to the island was about 1.5h, and there is an upper deck (which was relatively empty because it was cloudy, wet, and cold that day), and also an indoor lower deck lounge area. There is also a small snack shop where they serve bagels and other snacks.
1pm
Once we arrived at the island and got our car, we drove straight to the campsite (East Park Campground). We wanted to get there early because the sites are on a first come first serve basis. Turns out it wasn't necessary because there were only maybe 2 out of the many sites that were taken that day. Since we had a car, it was a short 5-10 mins drive. We saw 2 guys there that had walked all the way from the dock, and I rather feel sorry for them, although there was no space in our car to give them a ride. Anyways, the lady who works in the camp site told us to pick our pick, since the bad weather foreword and deterred most campers.
We drove around the sites and end up settling for Site #11. It was a nice small camp area surrounded by bushes, so it feels very private. And if you park your car by the entrance, you'll fee even more blocked in, like your own little oasis.
We had purchased firewood from the store (everything there was reasonably priced, I believe it was $10 for a big bucket of firewood), and proceeded to set up our tent.
And then we noticed them. The ARMY of MUFFLEHEADS. The are everywhere. Literally. There would be dozens of these annoying little buggers at any one point sitting on our car. After a while I gave up trying to swoosh them away.
3pm
Once we had our tent set up we decided to check out the Pelee Island Winery. Like everything else on the island, it was only a short drive. We took the wine tour for $5, which was led by a collage student on summer break. He offered us some pretty practical information on growing vines, and the $5 included free tastings and a souvenir glass. I learned some pretty cool stuff like how by planting a rose in front of the vine, they can use it as an early warning sign for bugs (if the rose starts to rot they know there is an issue), and how the different shapes of twine, and that most wine vines are grafted with the U.S. roots since they are more bug resistant.
5pm
After the tour we decided to not purchase any wine yet. Instead, we headed back to the campsite and started to make our meal. We had a BBQ propane stove so we made some delicious chicken wings, hot dogs, and heated up a stove pot for soup and veggies. Mmmm. We also made a campfire and made Smores. It was yummy! Once you learn to ignore the mosquitos and muffle heads, it was quite fun.
9pm
Went to sleep early. At rush there were a LOT of loud buzzing sound from the woods - I'm guessing they are flies or mosquitos? Anyways, glad we are safely in a closed tent. Night!
