Review: AT Escape - Bunker Evac

Escape Mission #15.

Today we attempted Bunker Evac.  It was one of the few places that are open during the holiday season.  Overall, it was a decent experience, we got out in about 35 minutes, using 1 hint in the process (although the game master was nice and gave us actually 1.5 hints).

The room is decorated well, once you step inside, you do feel like you're in a bunker.  There are some nice background sound effects to add to the mood.  The space is very, very small, so honestly I wouldn't recommend more than 3 escapees.  We went with 2, and thought it was the perfect number.

Puzzles are OK.  It wasn't overly difficult, although there was one that requires a bit of a logic leap and I don't think we could have solved it without help.  I like that there is a good variety of puzzles, and not just plain old combination locks.  Still, nothing was overly high-tech, and throughout the entire experience, there weren't any "ooooh" or "aaaaah" surprise moments.

Personally, I prefer BioLab Extraction and Library Lockup over Bunker Evac, so try those 2 rooms first before attempting Bunker.

Review: Omescape: Mysterious Study

There are no spoilers in this review.  However, if you prefer to know absolutely nothing about this room, just know that Mysteriuos Study is my favourite room at Omescape Markham.  Now stop reading and make the reservation!

I have now played all the room at Omescape Markham, and here's how I would rank them (based on my personal experience).

From Best to Worst (but honestly, there are no "bad" rooms at Omescape):

  1. Mysterious Study (this review)
  2. Penitentiary
  3. Joker's Asylum
  4. Kingdom of Cats
  5. Dark Altar

Click here for a list of other escape rooms I have tried.

Mysterious Study has it all - personally I think it has the best features of Penitentiary and Kingdom of Cats.  All the puzzles flow logically, and there's a nice balance of exploration and logical puzzle.  All in all, my favourite room at Omescape Markham.

It's not a difficult room - the 6 of us were able to get out with 1 minute to spare with ZERO hints required.  That's right - no hints!  To succeed, you'll need to have a good group composition where each individual excel at a different skill - logic, math, "finding things", etc.  As with rooms we have come to expect from Omescape, they are extremely well designed with attention to detail.  This is a multi-room escape.  But unlike Dark Altar, this is not a scary room (yay to that!).

Mysterious Study remains one of my favourite room at Omescape.  *Maybe* it's because we escaped with no hints.  I'm not sure, but either way, gather a group of friends and try it out!

Summary

  • The Bottom Line: One of the easier rooms at Omescape.  Also my favourite at this location.  I recommend 4-6 players for this room.
  • Score: 5/5

Review: Escape Room @ Omescape: Mysterious Study

Mysterious Study is my 9th escape room, and boy, was this ever the BEST!

We were a group of 6, with 4 experienced and 2 new players.  At this point I'm no longer a rookie with escape rooms, so knew (kinda...) what to expect.

As always, we were blindfolded and ushered into the room. This is a multi-room escape.  Our game master gave us the usual background.

Back to the game.  After my big fail at the Penitentiary, I find the puzzles at Mysterious Study to be much easier to solve, and I just love how the theme is tied so well together.

Did we manage to escape?  YES WE DID.  WIth ONE minute to spare.  AND we got on the wall of fame because we did not ask for any clues.  I did not think I could do it with no hints.  But we did!  So now there is a happy photo of us on the wall of fame.  Look for it next time you're at Omescape!

If you're looking for recommendations for rooms at Omescape, I would say start with Mysterious Study or Kingdom of Cats, and save Joker's Asylum and Penitentiary for last, when your group has gained enough experience to be able to quickly identify the puzzles and how to solve it.

Summary

  • Bottom Line: Best escape room game yet.
  • Score: 5/5

Review: Escape Room @ LOST Canada - Return of Nemesis

Return of Nemesis is my 10th escape room game.

I recently purchased a Groupon for Lost Canada, and after coordinating with a few other friends, called and made a reservation.  The lady that answered the call was quite friendly, and since I wasn't sure which room to book, she quickly recommended the Return of Nemesis based on our group size and experience.

The location is on the second floor of Queen West, just to the west of Bathurst street. I'm not a fan of driving in downtown Toronto, but I liked streetcars even loess, so I end up driving.  Parking on the side streets were ridiculously hard to find, so I end up with paid street parking on Queen.  I'm ok paying for parking, but was a little weary of parking on a busy street with lots of streetcar/ jay walkers/ bicyclers zipping in and around the car.

We arrived 15 mins early, and after paying the usual taxes (we had to pay taxes on the Groupon value), was given a large plastic bin to put in our belongings.  The bin was then placed behind the receptionist desk.  I do wish that they would provide us with real lockers, because on hindsight I shouldn't have put my wallet with my credit cards inside, especially when we are "locked" in a room and the guy monitoring our stuff can also monitor my whereabouts through the cameras!  Turns out I had nothing to worry about, as both my phone and wallet/ cash was intact when we got it back.  Still, minor suggestion - get real lockers!

Anyways, after storing our belongings, we were led to at the escape room.  Based on my past experience, especially with Omescape, I find the "wow" factor is better when I walked into the room with my eyes closed. My friends thought I was odd, but who cares!  Being blind folded when entering the room provides an additional enhancement in my experience.

Without going into too much details, this was a multi-room escape.  45 minutes.  The decorations were pretty cool and I liked that they incorporated elements of Hong Kong in it.

The puzzles themselves, although they were on the easy side (we escaped in about 40 minutes without the use of any clues), were relatively well designed with a variety of puzzles that uses some pretty cool tech.

I would rate this as an easy escape room, great for beginners, but probably a tad too easy for the 4 of us.  But we still managed to have a great time, so no complaints there!

The listed price on the website is $35 and $28 with Facebook like.  I do feel that this is on the pricier side, especially for a 45 mins escape game.  I might come back and try the other rooms, but only if there is another Groupon deal, or if the price point drops to $20.

Summary

  • Bottom Line: Good customer service, cool use of technology, an overall well decorated room. This is a beginner escape room, I would recommend for new players.
  • Score: 4/5

Review: Escape Room @ AT Escape: Magic Room

Magic Room is my 8th escape room, and although the decors were nice, it fell flat of my expectations.  This is a one room escape.  My initial feeling was good, because the decor was nice, but soon it became very frustrating because there wasn't much logical flow to the puzzles and in the end, the puzzles were not very well designed.

On the positive note, I like how there is more than just combination locks being used.  It's got some nice use of technology, but maybe because we didn't escape in the end, it wasn't satisfying.

Summary

  • Bottom Line: despite the nice decor and smart use of technology, Magic Room fell short of my expectations
  • Score: 3/5
    • 3.5/4 for room decor
    • 2/4 for puzzles
    • 1/2 for overall experience

Review Escape Room @ Omescape: The Penitentiary

There are no spoilers in this review.  However, if you prefer to know absolutely nothing about this room, just know that I highly recommend The Penitentiary.  Now stop reading and make the reservation!

Updated Review (Nov 2015)

I played Penitentiary again, this time with more experienced players. We still didn't manage to escape in time, needed maybe 2 minutes more.  However, my recommendation is to never redo a room, even if you only got halfway through the first time.  The magic is just not there anymore…

I have now played all the room at Omescape Markham, and here's how I would rank them (based on my personal experience).

From Best to Worst (but honestly, there are no "bad" rooms at Omescape):

  1. Mysterious Study
  2. Penitentiary
  3. Joker's Asylum
  4. Kingdom of Cats
  5. Dark Altar

Click here for a list of other escape rooms I have tried.

Original Review

The Penitentiary is my 7th escape room, and it is also by far the hardest and the most satisfying room I have been to.

As with all other Omescape rooms, you are asked to put on a blindfold before entering the room.  At first I thought it was a dumb idea as we are not kids and know full well that we're not being transported to another dimension or anything.  However, having done other escape rooms later where I was not asked to be put on blindfolds, I realized that by not being able to see the room when we walked in really does add to the overall experience of the game.

This is a multi-room escape, and as we were only a group of 5, we found it a bit challenging. I recommend at minimum a group of 6, with at least 3-4 experienced players.  You will find that there are some puzzles that are physically difficult to execute with only 5 players.

Did we escape?  Nope, not even close!  When the time was up we were maybe just a bit over halfway.

If this is your first time at an escape room, I would suggest going for an easier room like the Kingdom of Cats or the Mysterious Study.  Not to worry, Omescape will surpass your expectations so you will end up returning for the other rooms!  I have yet to find an escape room that is better executed than Omescape.

Summary

  • The Bottom Line: great for experienced players, go with at least 6 players.
  • Score: 5/5

Review: Escape Room @ Mystery Room Downsview - Doctor Nightmare

Mystery Room Downsview escape game review Toronto

There are some businesses that exist because the owners wants to share their passion, and then there are those that operate because they want to make a quick buck.  Unfortunately, Mystery Room Downsview is the latter.

This is my sixth escape room adventure.  We got the groupon for four, and made the reservation for Doctor Nightmare.  What really got to me more than anything else is the lack of attention to detail in the rooms.  Yes, this is a mult-room escape, but bigger isn't always better.  The rooms are worn out and in much disarray that I almost didn't cared about the puzzles.  To make matters worse, the rooms are located within a warehouse with a high ceiling, so the whole time we can hear the group next to us chat, since they didn't bother to tile the ceilings (all they did was put up some dry walls and add in doors), like an open maze.

Did we manage to escape?  Yes, with 8 minutes left on the clock.  Would I come back to play in another room?  Nope.

Summary

  • The Bottom Line: Not impressed.

Review: Escape Room @ Omescape - Joker's Asylum

There are no spoilers in this review.  However, if you prefer to know absolutely nothing about this room, just know that I highly recommend Joker's Asylum.  Now stop reading and make the reservation!
Updated (Nov 2015)

Original Review

Joker's Asylum is my 5th escape adventure, and my second one at Omescape.  Joker's is also one of the more difficult escape room at Omescape.

Without giving much away, our group of 5 was subdivided into 2 smaller groups.  I was in the smaller group (group of 2), and was led to a different room than the larger group.  The 2 groups will then have to work together to solve the puzzles.

Personally, I'm don't enjoy split games as much.  I feel that I'm missing out on some of the experience, but that's just my personal preference.  Anyways, the game itself is very well designed, with multiple rooms.  It wasn't that scary, but the storyline was a bit disturbing and creepy, probably attributed to the creepy insane music playing in the background.

Did we manage to escape?  Yes!  In the nick of time, but we did ask for multiple clues, so really, not.

Summary
  • The Bottom Line: I recommend 6 players for Joker's.  This is somewhat of a more advanced room, so try out Kingdom of Cats, Mysterious Study, or Dark Altar before attempting this.
  • Score: 4.5/5

Review: Escape Room @ AT Escape: Library Lockup

AT Escape
If you have been following my blog, you would have probably noticed a sudden influx of posts related to escape rooms.  That's because I'm somewhat addicted to them.  They are incredibly entertaining and fun to do, especially with friends.

Library Lockup @ AT Escape is my 4th escape adventure in the past few weeks.  We were at AT Escape a week ago when we tried out "BioLab Extraction", which was pretty fun and of which I would recommend.  You can read my review of BioLab Extraction here.

Maybe because my expectations were high, once we enter into Library Room, I was a little disappointed.  This is a 1 room escape with very limited decor.  By limited I meant that other than a desk, a few bookshelves, and a few other items there really isn't much else. I wish they could have thrown in an armchair or something to make it a bit more pleasant.  The room is also a bit smaller than I anticipated, being a 8 person max game.  As we are a group of 3 it was not an issue.  Still, I would not recommend more than 6.  Ideal size would probably be 4.

After getting over the initial disappointment, we delved straight to the puzzles.  There are more puzzles to solve compared to BioLab, and while they are no as "techy" and "cool", the puzzles were logical and enjoyable, and that was really the redeeming quality of the game.  The puzzles were fairly well thought out, and did go well with a library theme.  We did use the one free clue at 30mins into the game.  Did we escape in the end?  Yes we did!  With 5 mins to spare too.  Good job team!

Summary
  • The Bottom Line: I still prefer BioLab Extraction but the Library Lockup room is none-the-less a fun and an enjoyable experience.
  • Score: 4/5

Review Escape Room @ Omescape: Kingdom of Cats

My Escape Mission #1.

There are no spoilers in this review.  However, if you prefer to know absolutely nothing about this room, just know that I do recommend Kingdom of Cats.  Now stop reading and make the reservation!

Update (Nov 2015)

I have now played all the room at Omescape Markham, and here's how I would rank them (based on my personal experience).

From Best to Worst (but honestly, there are no "bad" rooms at Omescape):

  1. Mysterious Study
  2. Penitentiary
  3. Joker's Asylum
  4. Kingdom of Cats
  5. Dark Altar

Click here for a list of other escape rooms I have tried.

Original Review

The Kingdom of Cats is a multi-room challenge.  I also love that there are no element of gruesome or scariness to the storyline - you're trying to escape from a land of cute cat stuffed animals, how can you not love it?

There really isn't much of a storyline other than cats.  The puzzles are interesting, with a combination of puzzles that are more than just combination locks.  The puzzles were designed to challenge all your senses, and I appreciated that.  Did we manage to escape?  Nope, but we were close!  Just needed 5 more minutes.

Summary

  • Overall Score: 4.5/5
  • Address: Unit 7, 7501 Woodbine Ave (Woodbine & Esna Park, same plaza as Boss Club and Gold Mark Cuisine)
  • Max Players: 3-8 (I recommend 4-6)
  • Time: 60 mins
  • Cost: $22-$30 p.p. with Facebook check-in discounts

Freeing Toronto: Black Swan Review

My Escape Mission #2.

Overview

  • Address: 9625 Yonge Street (Yonge & Weldrick)
  • Max Players: 6 (recommend 4)
  • Time: 45 minutes
  • Cost: $25-$28 p.p. with some discounts possible

Room Setting

This is a 1 room challenge.  The setting is a ballet studio, with mirrors, ballet bars, and lockers.  Nothing out of the ordinary,  but I find the decor a simplistic for a 1 room challenge.  Also, the sound proofing in the room sucks.  I could hear people in the adjacent room screaming and laughing, which also ruined my experience somewhat.

Puzzles

This sucked.  All the puzzles are lock-based.  Either a combination lock or a magnetic lock.  BORING.  What's worse is that there are some 3 digit combination locks, which you can theoretically lock-pick in about 10 mins.  Did we escape?  Yes!  20 mins into the game, but really by lock-picking rather than solving the puzzles.    Bummer.  The only redeeming quality is that there is a great storyline.

Would I recommend this challenge?

There are probably other escape room challenges that are better designed.  However, I did enjoy the storyline, but the price point is a bit high for this room - I would say this is a $15-$20 pp room.

Overall Score: 3/5

AT Escape: BioLab Extraction Review

AT Escape

Overview

  • Address: 173 Sheppard Avenue West
  • Recommended Players: 4
  • Time: 45 minutes
  • Cost: $18+tax with Facebook check-in and like

Summary

A thoroughly enjoyable experience.  Room has been designed with great care, and you can tell that thought has been put into creating the puzzles (not a single combination lock - yay!).  I would recommend.  Would not suggest more than 4 players.  (Overall score: 9/10)

Room Setting

Without giving away too much, the room is set in a biolab.  This is a 2 room escape.  Room is nicely decorated, with beakers, lab coats, microscope, and some other high tech toys.  (Score: 3/4)

Puzzles

I LOVED that there is not one single combination lock in this challenge.  The locks are amazingly designed and our group had such a fun time trying to solve the locks.  Hands down the best design.  Because this is a difficult room, you're allowed to ask for 2 clues instead of 1.  Trust me, you'll need it.  Did we end up escaping?  Nope, but we were close!  (Score: 4/4)

Staff/ Ambience

Friendly staff that actually tried to help by giving out more clues than allowed, which we appreciate!  However the waiting area is really small and there are no amenities/ boardgames available. (Score: 1.5/2)

Would I recommend this challenge?

Yes!  Overall Score: 4/5

Top 5 Tips for an Enjoyable Escape Room Adventure

So popular that even Big Bang Theory wrote an episode on Escape Room games
Escape rooms have become my newfound favourite pastime.  I've only been to 3 at this point, but each experience provides such a unique perspective that I find myself drawn to these adventures.

A quick search on Google would reveal an abundance of Escape Rooms that have crept up in Toronto over the last few months.  Some are of better design and quality than others.

If you think about it, it is a business with a low operating cost and potentially high profit margin.  Other than the initial design and construction of the room, and the rent/ utilities cost thereafter, there really isn't much to it.  No wonder then, that the quality of escape rooms are so vastly different.

From a business model perspective - you are not really looking for "repeat" customers.  Yes, satisfied clients would return to for the other rooms, but once they have completed a mission, they will not return to that same room again.  This is different from the restaurant or even the amusement park model where you can hope for the same customers to return again and again.  Because of this, there are many escape rooms that would cheap out and try to minimize the cost, by the time you realize it is a "rip-off"  (who would want to spend an hour picking various combination locks…), you have already paid into that "one-time" cost system.

Which is why it is so important to do your research beforehand and get feedback from others that have gone before you.  I rely a lot on internet research and speaking with friends.

Here are my top tips to enhance your escape room experience:

1. Research your venue

This is a must.  There are some escape rooms that are better than others.  Don't get caught paying $20 and being stuck in a poorly designed rooms with a series of combination locks.

2. Look for Groupon deals

Competition is fierce so there are an abundance of online deals available.

3. Keep the # of players minimal

I have been to escape games where we maxed out the number of players.  It was not a lot of fun- inevitably you will have a few that will have to sit out.  Think how much fun it is to have 8 people trying to read from the same piece of paper at the same time.  There is no cost benefit anyways.  You pay by the person, so why not split the group up?  Do not exceed the recommended # of players to maximize the experience.

4. Facebook check-ins are for suckers

Personally I find it annoying that you have to "check-in" or "like" on Facebook to get a discount.  But I also want the discount. So what I do is I went ahead and do what they asked, but unlike or delete the post afterwards.  It actually doesn't really matter to me to have the post there, but there is some measure of satisfaction to defying this annoying requirement that most of the escape room venues seem to be asking for.

5.  Think backwards

I've come to the realization that once you get into the designer's head and think from their perspective, the puzzles become a lot easier to solve.  It's a little hard to explain it, but find your next step to solving the puzzle, then work backwards.  This will minimize the amount of time you spent on clues that are meant to throw you off.

There you have it.  My top 5 tips for an enjoyable escape room experience.  Do you have other tips to share?
